Sidney Alvarez Shares a Story of Heartbreak and Healing
After spending decades telling the stories of others, journalist Sidney A. Alvarez is turning the focus toward his own life in his debut book, “Your Soulmate Expired, And That’s OK.”
The memoir explores Alvarez’s experience rebuilding his life after the abrupt end of a 23-year relationship. Part personal account and part practical guide, the book offers eight tips for readers working through heartbreak, loss and the difficult process of learning to trust and love again.
“As a television journalist, I spent decades telling other people’s stories. This is the first time I have shared my own. ‘Your Soulmate Expired, And That’s OK’ is an honest account of heartbreak, resilience, and rebuilding a life after a 23-year relationship ended,” Alvarez said. “It is a reminder that our most painful chapters do not have to define the rest of our story.”
Throughout the book, Alvarez writes about growing up gay in environments where family expectations, religion, culture and professional discrimination affected his sense of identity and self-worth. He also addresses mental health struggles, religious shame, workplace discrimination, sexual assault and the emotional consequences of feeling unseen.
The book does not present Alvarez as a therapist or counselor. Instead, it draws from his lived experiences as someone who fell in love, lost himself in a relationship and struggled to find effective support while attempting to heal.

“This book is not about blaming anyone or reliving the past. It is about learning how to survive when the life you envisioned suddenly disappears,” Alvarez said. “If my story helps even one person find hope, rediscover their worth, or believe they can love again, then sharing these deeply personal experiences was worth it.”
Alvarez is a multi-Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist whose career has taken him to major media markets across the United States. Known for his human-centered approach to journalism, he has spent much of his career highlighting the experiences of others.
