Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo, a Dress for You!
It’s 5:30 in the morning on a normal Sunday. Most people might be tucked into their beds, planning to sleep in on the last day of the weekend. However, on March 23, girls from El Paso and Juárez lined up outside Ella Blu, waiting for the opportunity to pick out a free prom dress.
As the girls waited in line in anticipation, they prepared to browse organized racks filled with beautiful, gently used prom dresses in every color and style imaginable. Upon entering, each girl had 25 minutes to select and try on dresses before taking home a practically new gown, easing the financial burden that often comes with prom season.
As incredible as the event itself is, it’s even more impressive to learn that it was organized by four local high school juniors: Amelie Perches, Natalia Espino, Lucia Urrea, and Gianna Guerra through their organization, Belle of the Ball.
“It’s a known organization across the country, but we decided to bring it to El Paso because we really saw a need for it and thought it was an important mission to help our community,” Espino said.
The chapter was founded two years ago when Perches, now the organization’s president, introduced the idea to her friends.
“Amelie is the one who brought the idea to us since her cousin Sophia had done it a couple of years ago when she was younger,” Urrea said. “She gave the idea to Amelie, who then brought it to us. Her sister has also been a huge help and has been like a sponsor to us because she helps us organize and gives us suggestions.”
“We are a group of best friends,” Guerra said. “We all go to Loretto Academy, which helped because community service is something we’re already used to and genuinely enjoy doing. At Belle of the Ball, our mission is to help girls across El Paso who need dresses and might need a little extra help. We want to be there for them.”
To bring the event to life, the girls received support from Ella Blu, Bridal Novias, and the community, which donated hundreds of dresses to the cause.
“Amelie’s family has helped us a lot since her aunt is the owner of Ella Blu and has really supported our mission,” Urrea said. “Having them as a drop-off location has helped tremendously and taken so much off our shoulders. We’re always willing to pick up donations, but having drop-off locations makes everything much easier. That’s thanks to having a great relationship with Sophia from Ella Blu and Elodia from Bridal Novias.”
“It’s surprising how many people want to help,” Guerra added. “We get direct messages all the time from girls at different schools wanting to donate dresses. It’s so heartwarming to see how many people want to contribute. We also contact schools and distribute flyers so we can spread awareness about donation locations.”
A single dress can truly make a difference in a young woman’s life. What we wear and how we feel in our clothing can be especially important for high school students preparing for one of the most memorable nights of their lives. Unfortunately, formalwear often comes with a hefty price tag. Belle of the Ball helps eliminate that obstacle.
“It might seem like it’s not that big of an issue, and some people might say, ‘It’s just a prom dress,’” Espino said. “But for many girls, prom is something they’ve looked forward to since they were little. It’s a huge milestone, and everyone deserves to have positive memories of that experience. We want every girl to have a great prom, and the cost of a dress shouldn’t be a burden. Helping those who need that extra support is exactly why we’re here.”
Not only did donations from Sophia Adamson and Elodia Perches of Ella Blu and Bridal Novias help stock the event with beautiful dresses, but the organization’s ambassadors also played a key role. During the event, they served as personal stylists, helping attendees find the right sizes and discover dresses they felt confident wearing.
The organization has nearly doubled its donations since last year, a success the founders partly attribute to social media, particularly the popular El Paso Instagram account FitFam.
“It’s important to put a face to a name so these girls can see that we’re girls just like them,” Espino said. Urrea added that their social media presence grew significantly after FitFam featured the organization.
“Their post had a huge impact,” Urrea said. “It’s amazing to see how many people within one community can come together and support something like this.”
Although organizing an event of this size while balancing high school responsibilities is no easy task, the young women say finding motivation has never been difficult.
“Last year, one of the first girls I spoke with told me she had been struggling with medical bills,” Espino said. “She told me how grateful she was that the burden of buying a prom dress had been lifted from her shoulders. There are so many girls with stories like that, and it’s rewarding to know we’re able to help girls we’ve never even met before.”
For the Belle of the Ball team, the mission extends far beyond dresses. It’s about confidence, opportunity, and ensuring that every young woman has the chance to feel special on one of the most important nights of her high school experience.
Through the generosity of local businesses, community members, and the dedication of these young women, Belle of the Ball continues to prove that small acts of kindness can create lasting memories and make a meaningful difference throughout the Borderland.
